As Best I Can Remember ...

"Elephants never forget!" Not sure why we believe that, but I have heard it a lot during my life.   About 12 years ago I woke up in the middle of the night thinking to myself, "my parents are getting old!"   They were in their late 70's at that time, and I had come to the realization that I needed to spend as much time with them as possible without neglecting my family.  It became a routine for me to leave Long Cane Middle on Tuesday afternoons, and call my mother in Waverly Hall to ask if they would be home for me to visit.  Without fail Mother would be home and encourage me with her favorite words, "I'll have something for you to eat when you get here."  My visits consisted of supper, and sitting on the porch passing time with her and my stepfather, Howard.  As I look back on those days now, it was time well spent.  Both Mother and Howard are gone ahead to prepare supper for me in heaven.   My kids still recall eating a "Granny Breakfast" and feasting on "MustGO soup."   Mother would clean out the refrigerator and put it all in a big stock pot for soup.
It occurs to me that some day I will go home to be with God.  I have a lot of stories to pass on to my children, grandchildren, etc. that are still left untold.  So I will be using this forum to tell stories from my life so far "as best I can remember."  My children, Maribeth and Stephen, never knew my dad, or my half-brother chuck or Teddy (both deceased).   The Columbus, Georgia, where I grew up is no more.  As I found out a few years ago, you CANNOT drive across the 14th Street Bridge anymore, but there is a 13th Street Bridge.  Lakebottom is now Weracoba Park.   The Beallwood Connector is called Veteran's Parkway.   However, I am told that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
If you aren't interested at this point, I understand.  If you are I encourage you to record somehow stories from your life for posterity.   I love to write, and hope this will be a catharsis for me of sorts.  Stay tune for the first episode.
